Severn Branch Christmas Dinner was held in December with 32 members, wives, widows and guests in attendance. I special award was made to Stan Knipe for 25 yrs branch service by Mike Cornwall
In December 39 members, wives, widows, and guests of the Severn Branch of the RGBW Association held their annual Christmas Luncheon at the Dog at Over. This year the branch had a special guest, Colonel Mike Cornwall, who is the UK Chairman of the Association attending. A good time was had by one and all with the vow to do it all again next year.
Colonel Cornwall had been invited along to present a well-earned award to Mr Stan Knipe for 25 years branch service. Stan is a founder member of the Severn Branch which was started as a Regimental Association for the Royal Berkshire Regiment which Stan, along with many other local “lads” served. Stan has held every committee role during his time with the branch and only stood down as treasurer last year to start a well-earned retirement, but he will still be keeping a watchful eye over all things to do with the branch . Stan is also credited with keeping alive the Maiwand parade in Reading in July each year which remembers the gallantry of soldiers of the Royal Berks in Afghanistan in the 19th century.
The RGBW Association Severn Branch is a thriving old comrades association for members of regiments which have been amalgamated into its current incarnation, The Rifles, We welcome ex-members from the Gloucester’s, Berkshires, Wiltshire’s, RGBW, Wessex Regiments and also the Rifles to come along to our branch meetings which are held throughout the year at the Saintbridge Rugby Club.
Weymouth Armed Forces Weekend 23/24 June 2018
Several members of the Gloucester Severn Branch attended the Weymouth Armed Forces weekend over the weekend on June 23 and 24th.
This event is very much a firm favourite of branch members with this event now becoming more of an annual pilgrimage, indeed 4 members have already booked B&B for next year with an old Wessex Mortar Platoon Regiment comrade, who they meet over the weekend, who now owns and runs a B&B in Weymouth.
The event this year was held in sweltering heat with the temperature during the parade reaching 28° Celsius or 82° Fahrenheit in old money. With 3 members marching in the parade never has the term “old sweats” been more appropriate. The Branch Standard was carried by Roger Smith and the Crete Veterans Standard was carried by Stephen Tierney (or Stumpy as he is universally known by his many friends).

Off we go!
After the parade the heat did give a very good excuse (if they really needed one) to attend the local Wetherspoon’s to top up the fluids lost during the very hot day.
“Tiddy” Ferris sleeps off his “1 over the eight”
Tiddy will tell you that the heat probably caused him to snooze and it had nothing to do with the beer he had consumed.
