Up and down the country cities, towns and villages have been honouring the centenary the award of the Victoria Cross to those born within their boundaries by laying a special Victoria Cross paving stone . On 22nd June 2018 Odiham, in Hampshire , laid their VC stone to honour the award to the recipient 100 years ago, Captain James Manley VC DSO MC who went on to eventually retire as a Brigadier and being a Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the then County o f Avon

RAYMOND HENRY PEART BEM  

Many will be delighted to know of the recent announcement within the Queen’s Birthday Honours, 2018.
Ray Peart, formerly of The Gloucestershire Regiment, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for ‘services to injured Service personnel and to Charity’. Some will have a feel for the extraordinary scale and longevity of Ray’s charitable work assisted by his wife, Claire, family and close friends. A few of the major beneficiaries have included: BLESMA; Blind Veterans UK; and, The Rifles Care for Casualties.

Dame Janet Trotter, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, has been in contact to extend her congratulations. Later in the year HM Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, on behalf of HM The Queen, will present the BEM to Ray Peart.

On a very warm summer Sunday afternoon members predominantly the Wiltshire Regiment assembled in the Devizes Market Place and a select few who still felt able followed the Standards to St John’s Church for a service conducted by the Association Chaplain, the Venerable Alan Jeans, Archdeacon of Sarum.

112 members from across the association met on an extremely sunny Sunday in the Hythe Suite at the Taunton Rugby Club. Whilst the vast majority of the attendees were of the Glorious Glosters there was a sprinkling of members from the Royal Berkshires, Wiltshire and DERR.

I am a Rifleman – Touring Exhibition

"I am a Rifleman" is a fascinating exhibition which tells the extraordinary story of Britain’s largest infantry Regiment; The Rifles. The exhibition provides a glimpse into the experiences and achievements of soldiers who have served in the Regiment.

The Rifles' success is based on four core values: Innovation, Mutual Respect, Self-Discipline and Forward-Thinking. This exhibition enables visitors to immerse themselves in twelve stories that bring these four core values to life. Using individual accounts, images and mementoes, "I am a Rifleman" shows what it means to be a soldier in The Rifles today.

"I am a Rifleman" is part of The Rifles Collection, Winchester UK wide exhibition tour.

Events leading to Captain Manley James winning his VC with 8th Battalion The Gloucestershire Regiment, in March 1918. Will be known to some. Soon, and in common with all VC holders from the First World War, a paving stone commemorating his actions will be unveiled at his birthplace.
