 The Newsletter

At our AGM in March the Committee were reappointed for another year. However, in the autumn our Chairman, Graham Wicks, resigned due to a change of location. Graham is moving to a bungalow in King’s Stanley which will be much better suited to his and his wife’s future needs. He has acted in the role of Chairman since 1996 and we thank him for all his hard work on behalf of the Branch and wish him all the very best in his new home. One of our members, Morris Vizor, stepped in and took over the role of Chairman.

In May of this year Scott McBryde paraded our Standard at the funeral of the late Bill Whiffin at St Peters Church, Clearwell. Scott also paraded the Standard at Gloucester’s Armed Forces Day on Saturday 21 June, joining forces with Bob Walker, Chairman of the Forest of Dean Branch of the RGBW Association.

Members joined the Forest of Dean branch for a lunch at The Tudor Arms, Slimbridge in June. The Forest of Dean members are great company. During lunch we were treated to a drive past of vintage motor bikes and cars on their way to the adjoining camp site.

Our Standard was also paraded at the Holy Trinity Church, Drybrook for a Service of Commemoration to mark the start of WWI. Roy Watkins and Scott McBryde answered a cry of help from the Organisers to participate. We were very pleased to play a small part in the Service.

One of our members, Richard Green, has moved house to Colchester. Richard was in Junior Leaders with our President Maj Phil Hall and Scott. In other words they go back a very long time, (emphasis on Very!). Richard visits family in the Stroud district from time to time and we all meet up for a good ‘chin wag’.

Dave Timbrell went on a Battlefield Tour to the Menin Gate this summer and wore his Glosters badge with great pride.

At the end of November a small group of members visited Bristol Docks and toured around the SS Gt Britain in its original dry dock. Well worth the visit and the entry ticket lasts a year so some of us may plan another trip.

Scott will be attending the Garden of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey and he will also be participating in the Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph with, hopefully, Richard Green. Unfortunately Morris and Carl Vizor will miss the Cenotaph this year, but they will be playing their part by cooking a curry lunch at the Army Reserve Centre in Cirencester after Cirencester’s Remembrance Sunday activities. If the weather is cold no doubt their curry lunch will be very welcome. Graham will not be able to lay the RGBW wreath in Stroud on Remembrance Sunday but luckily Eddie Tucker, an ex-Stroud member, has stepped into the breach to perform this task for us.

The year ends with Branch members and their wives and partners meeting up for a Christmas lunch at the beginning of December. We shall be pleased to have the company of Graham and Linda Wicks. Maj David Hudson is coming along and we shall also be joined by Rita Owens travelling down from Nottingham and her brother William from Dursley. Rita and her late husband Wyndham played a vital part in the Branch during the 1980s and early 1990s before their move to Nottingham.

The branch welcomes new members. We are a friendly little group so contact our Secretary Scott McBryde for details.

Percy Franklin is awarded The Chevalier de la Legion d`Honneur

Stroud Branch Member Mr Percy Franklin aged 91yrs, was presented with the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur by Lt Col MJR Motum DL, County Secretary, The Rifles, at Painswick Golf Club on Wednesday 16th March 2106. It was a very happy occasion for Percy, surrounded by family, friends and Branch members.

Percy was a private in the Gloucestershire Regiment, attached to the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers on D-Day. On June 9 1944 he disembarked and advanced through Caen, Falaise Gap and Nantes as a "hedgerow fighter". While manning a machine gun position at Pont Audemer and 88mm German shell exploded nearby blowing him across the road. His life was saved by a tree stump. He suffered serious facial and leg injuries and was taken to hospital in Bayeux on August 25, eventually being returned to Southampton on a Polish Hospital Ship.

 Field of Remembrance 2016

On Thursday 10th November 2016 Stroud branch members Scott McBryde and Paul Whitcher (both ex Glosters) attended the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey in support of the RGBW Association. HRH Duke of Edinburgh was in good spirits and HRH Prince Harry darted from side to side talking to as many groups as possible. A very worthwhile event to attend

'The Remembrance Sunday Cenotaph Parade at Horse Guards, Sunday 13 November 2016'

Stroud branch members Morris and Carl Vizor, Scott McBryde and Paul Whitcher attended the Royal British Legion Remembrance Parade at Horse Guards on Sunday 13 November. 10,000 veterans were on parade. This year the RGBW contingent formed part of Column A which was at the front of the Parade. Jenny and Carol accompanied husbands Scott and Paul to the Parade and stood at Horse Guards Road watching all the diplomatic cars arrive at the rear of Downing Street. Boris Johnson walked down Horse Guards Road with his wife (he rode his bicycle last year). HRH Prince Charles took the Salute at the March Past.

 Branch Christmas Lunch 2016

Stroud Branch met up at The Clothiers Arms Stroud for Christmas Lunch on Tuesday 6th December. Lovely meal and fantastic staff. Percy wore his Legion d'honneur with pride and enjoyed the meal. Margaret was unfortunately not well and missed the meal. Richard drove over from Colchester trying not to break speed limits and Rita drove down from Nottingham the day before. Val had undergone an eye operation the week before but was determined to make it. A small branch but tight knit.
